What type of work is done at PNNL?
Research at PNNL strengthens the U.S. foundation for innovation, and they help find solutions for not only DOE, but for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, other government agencies, universities, and industry. More specifically, PNNL provides unique scientific equipment and science and engineering personnel to prevent and counter acts of terrorism through applied research in information analysis, cyber security, and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. They also work to increase U.S. energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported oil through hydrogen and biomass-based fuels research and to reduce the effects of energy generation and use on the environment. PNNL hosts other summer research opportunities and STAR Fellows frequently work with undergraduate teams during the course of their project.
Research Opportunities for STAR Fellows
PNNL will be offerring several STAR Fellowships, often involving multi-disciplinary research efforts. One ongoing project requires Fellows with a coding background working with a chemical management database project which tracks spills and interactions. Other projects frequently look for Fellows with mathematical and/or chemical training, but projects are diverse and extend into marine energy projects at the Sequim Marine Sciences Laboratory. Through their outreach work, STAR Fellows will frequently connect with other summer interns and be able to participate in enrichment activites on site and at the neighboring STAR Partner, LIGO. STAR Fellows at PNNL are able to take advantage of affordable on-site accommodations organized by the lab.
